Breaking the Silence: Stories of Courage and Resilience from Ukrainian Women Fighting Stigma Surrounding Mental Health Support
The Impact of War on Mental Health: Stories of Courage and Resilience
More than two years since the war escalated in Ukraine and ten years since it began, the impact of this conflict goes far beyond the borders of the country. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) estimates that 30 per cent of Ukrainians may be affected by mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. This Mental Health Awareness Week 2024, we speak to the courageous women who are breaking the silence and fighting stigma surrounding mental health support.
Inna, Hanna, and Veronika had to leave their homes after the war escalated in Ukraine in 2022, each facing their own challenges and struggles as they navigate life in a new country. Inna, a trained psychotherapist, found herself in West Sussex with her husband and dog Cooper, facing uncertainty and trauma. Despite her own struggles, she recognized the need for mental health support among Ukrainian refugees and began working with the IRC to launch Wellbeing Days and a mental health course tailored for their experiences.
Hanna, a humanitarian worker, had to leave her life and career in Kyiv with her daughter Diana, facing the challenges of starting over in a new country. Despite the stress and uncertainty, she continues to prioritize her mental health and attend support sessions with the IRC.
Veronika, a software developer, vividly recalls the moment she had to flee her home in Kyiv and the toll it has taken on her mental health. She has been working on improving her mental health with online resources and therapy in the UK, while also recognizing the challenges of integrating into a new community with language barriers.
These women’s stories highlight the resilience and strength of Ukrainian refugees as they rebuild their lives in the face of adversity. Through their courage and determination, they are not only overcoming their own mental health challenges but also working to support others in similar situations.
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) plays a crucial role in providing support and resources to refugees affected by humanitarian crises, helping them survive, recover, and rebuild their lives. In the UK, the IRC works to support refugees in rebuilding their lives and integrating into their new communities.
As we reflect on the impact of war on mental health, let us continue to support and uplift those who are facing challenges and working towards healing and resilience. Together, we can break the silence, fight stigma, and provide the necessary support for those in need.
