Researchers conducted an experiment to measure how emotions influence learning in dogs. They found that pups who received pets and praise in addition to treats performed better than those who only received treats or light reprimanding. During the experiment, dogs were taught new cue words for tricks they already knew using two different training styles: “permissive” and “controlling.” Dogs in the permissive group received praise, pets, and treats for successful attempts, while dogs in the controlling group only received treats or light reprimands for success or failure.

After each training session, dogs were given EEG scans to analyze their memory functions. The results showed that dogs in the controlling group experienced more stress and increased sleep, indicating that negative reinforcement can have a detrimental effect on a dog’s ability to learn.

Interestingly, dogs who were first exposed to controlling sessions and later to permissive sessions showed greater improvement during their second sessions. This suggests that a positive training environment can have a significant impact on a dog’s performance and welfare.
